The Coast Starlight has been relatively on time or even early since August 2007 because UP has begun to give Amtrak priority.

Ask for a seat on the left hand side of the train- that way you get to see the sea. We're from Uk and did the trip in August. Staying overnight in Seattle was quite expensive and the train was late in. Not a very pleasant walk to hotel - lots of drifters

i'm from Australia and will be travelling on the Coast Starlight northward from LA. does anyone have any travel tips?

The Coast Starlight on Jun 17, 2007 from LAX to SEA was ACTUALLY 10 MINS EARLY !!!!!!! Maybe the fact that the CEO of Amtrak had his private car attached to the Coast Starlight had something to do with it??? They still need to upgrade the sleeper cars / dining cars etc. actually they need to mothball Amtrak trains and get up to speed like the Maglev train in Shanghai etc.

You know, I pity the people that are in such a hurry that they don't take the time to just relax, it's all get on the plane and go. Amtrak is the way to go, no questions. I'm going to Disneyland in December of this year, and if I already didn't have these prepaid tickets (My last trip on the plane to SoCal fell through so I couldn't go on the trip and the tickets are reusable.), I would ride Amtrak.

Speaking of SAVING AMTRAK! Some of the Sleeper Cars on the Coast Starlight (Train #14) need drastic refurbishing... Money is always an issue, so why not move those cars down to the border of Mexico, and have the skilled Mexican upholsterers, refurbish the interiors..at a pittance of cost. Nothing like seeing the current ORANGE and GREEN combo in the FIRST CLASS? Deluxe Bedrooms!! YECCCK!

Unfortunatley this is true, the starlight needs to go through a makeover just like the empire builder which proved to be so succesful.
