This list is based on personal taste and I wont say anything about it but I do want to say something.
MUSIC ACTUALLY DID COME OUT AFTER 1985! not only good music, but incredibly amazing music. You just have to take a second and look for it.

Here's my top 10, just for shiz, and in no order: the Beatles Nirvana I Am Kloot The Stone Roses Josh Ritter Tom Waits Green Day Jeff Buckley Radiohead Metallica Looking on it, it seems to need more Classic Rock like the Who and Rory Gallagher, but if I made 20 they'd probs be in it.
