(Full Typed Speech) It is moments like this that truly remind us of how fast time fly's by. But what if I told you - you could slow time down? What if I told you - you could forget some moments and emphasize others? Well this you can do - as the director of your own movie. Would you be a villain or a hero? Would it be a drama or a comedy? Well however you cast yourself and whatever genre it maybe we must first thank our designers, cast members, and producers or in other words our teachers, friends, and families for making this production possible.
As the director, would you emphasize high school? Would you include those times in the hall where you weren't sure if someone was waving at you or the kid next to you, so you waved anyway only to find out you were wrong. Or maybe those mornings where you hit snooze way to many times and had to blow every stop sign and cut everyone off with leftover toothpaste foaming from your mouth to make it to school on time. Or when you tried to be nice to your fellow classmates by sliding your answer key to the side of your desk only to have your teacher not return the kindness. Moments like these are part of growing up and for coming of age films, essential. Through our awkward and irresponsible mistakes, we mature. Good choices comes from experience and experience comes from bad choices. As my Grandma once said "we all make mistakes." So if your ever feeling down, just think you're not the first to hit the snooze button and that its never to late to flip the paper over and right wrongs.
In my movie, there would be a dramatic scene where the camera zooms in on a millers mountain melt with Morgan Freeman's voice in the background saying: Life is a millers mountain melt. You have your boneless chicken strips glossed over with your choice of sauce, mounted upon greasy fries, and gently topped with pounds of bacon, cheese, and scallions. When the tray is finally placed before you its as if staring upon a beautiful mountain in the Himalayas, and if you have the courage to complete it, its like climbing Mount Everest. Once you reach the bottom, your heart may stop either due to pure satisfaction or clotting. Like in life, Galli asks for his Mountain Melt without scallions, but sometimes he's given them anyway. Some people in his seat, would bang on the table and demand retribution; others simply complain in silence. But if there's one thing he's learned in life, complaining gets you nowhere. With the scallions staring back at him, Galli can either ask the waitress for a new tray, pick them off, or swallow it down, but sometimes in life all we can do is swallow. All we can do is accept the bad to appreciate all the good that surrounds it.
In your movie, what soundtrack would you have? I would have Young Forever by Jay Z playing as I'm speaking now. My voice would be drowned out as the camera pans over the class of 2010, and then my voice would - rise up. As the song asks, do you really want to live forever young? And I would say, only through aging do we know the greatness of youth. Only through death can we appreciate the beauty of life. Only through bad times can we love the good ones.
In your movie, would you include a scene of yourself staring at the clock, anticipating the strike of 2:35. Waiting forever for that final bell to ring. As we look over our last 12 years of education it seems not much longer then anticipating that final bell. It seems that life is not much longer then a movie. We should always remember to appreciate these moments as they last. Live your life to the fullest, do what you love. So when you sit down to watch your own production you wont fall asleep. So when the credits come on and the curtain comes down, you'll be left smiling. You see life is too short to get upset about the little things. In movies and in life a different angle, a different perspective can be taken on any situation.
Now the camera shifts away from high school, toward the rest of our lives. As we age our movie becomes richer, but as high school is what you made it, life is what you make it. As the camera focuses in on you in your future. What will be your movie? The stage is set, the time is now, so hear yourself say: lights, cameras, action.
