Alumide is a 3D printing material made of mixing a polyamide powder with aluminum. The resulting material can be used for Selective Laser Sintering machines. The material is rigid and has a very eye catching quality in sunlight. In this video we show you some 3D printed models made with the alumide material. The models include a mini ferris wheel 3D printed out of one single piece and a ball bearing. Apologies for the rather "home made" quality of the video.

  • @shapeways is this material strong enough to be machined without fracturing?

  • @Bertziethegreat Have not tried this personally, but it would depend on the thickness, from and process you would like to use.

What did you have in mind?

  • @Shapeways Was hoping to tap some threads into it.

  • @Bertziethegreat Hmm, it may work as a process but I am not sure of the shear strength, Alumide is slightly brittle compared to 3D printed Nylon.

I do not think it would fracture throughout the structure during the tapping process, only the threads may crack if it fails.

You could of course try and 3D model in the thread.

  • "Similar to White Strong & Flexible" except it's not white, not strong, and not flexible. :o)
