And also because a large number of those 'European-descended' Bolivians living in the East are a bunch of racists who use to lord it over the 'Native Indian' Bolivians of the western half of the country, ever since Morales - who is of native descent - got elected these white supremacists have been extremely agitated that a member of the so called backward classes has risen to become a ruler of their country. Hope Morales wins and teaches them a lesson.

Most of Bolivias wealth exists on the Eastern side, Morales is trying to make it easier for the West to "catchup". Now the East isn't receiving as much subsidy etc and they are rebelling.

regional powers in bolivia are real - not just made up. sure they are exacerbated by the cia - which is great at opening divides, but they are also a real power to be negotiated with. maybe i'm using the term 'federalism' incorrectly. i meant 'central system'.

It's a fight against the CIA, got nothing to do with federalism.

seems like it's a balancing game - balancing regional autonomy w/ a federal system. how can regional power to make decisions benefit from centralized power? how can regional and centralized power systems support each other? how can both regional and central power systems be secure in their respective roles?

This is very interesting, I live in Puerto Rico, which I find satisfying since being close to the US gives me the US perspective of things, and yet, by retaining our Hispanic roots, I get to see the Latin America perspective of things. Things are going to get interesting, Chavez cut oil to Exxon Mobile, US in losing influence all over the world, not just the Hispanic region of the world. The few worth wild leaders America had that could change the path being taken now have already lost.

This is probably going to be the deciding conflict between South American independence and US imperialism. If Morales wins, the face of America will change, if he loses, all the progress made in recent years could be lost.

Too bad now days our reps aren't enough. :(
Democracy may be dead in the USA, but it is alive and well in South America!
In our corporate controlled one wing (right wing) elections the majority of Americans DO NOT vote!!!
I am glad to see the majority electing leftists in South and Central America!
Vote third party!

I hope for his success! Not so long ago, the US took complete control of the entire southern continent with militaristic coups and unworkable economic ideas that impoverished or murdered so many. Taking care of people is the last thing that the US corporatocracy seems to want.
