A medium-strength typhoon, Morakot wrought catastrophic rainfall to Taiwan. In three short days, the typhoon inundated the islands south-central and southeastern regions with over 2 meters of precipitation—the equivalent of a whole years rainfall, triggering massive landslides in mountainous regions and burying entire villages under mudflow. With heavy flooding in low-lying coastal areas and levee failures at rivers, many streets and roadways now resemble inland waterways. Morkot has caused the most severe loss of life and property to Taiwan in 50 years.
