From my understanding of the bible, Israelites were the chosen people because of Abraham's faithfulness to God. I think at that period, many people have strayed from God, but Abraham did not, so God was pleased with him and promised that his descendants will populate the earth and they will be the 'chosen one'. Subsequently, Jacob, Abraham's grandson, inherited the birthright and was renamed Israel by God... and Jesus was birth to be an Israelite by race/nationality.

Question. Why did God specifically have the Israelites as his chosen people in the Old Testament? It seems a little racist towards all the other races and other groups of people (or should it be termed favoritism? but the Lord doesn't pick favorites) ...
