July 9, 2005. SCCA SM/T (Spec Miata) race at Blackhawk Farms raceway in Rockton, Illinois.

Video shows the black Spec Miata striking the "video car" in the right-rear. If you listen carefully you will hear multiple impacts from the rear as the "offender" continues to push his way through, resulting in the "video car" making contact with the white VW.

Without this video, the wrong driver would have been charged with the infraction since the race official's view of the incident was obstructed by the field. The initial "corner report" placed blame on our "video car" and the race officials were not receptive to our side of the story until Jason Saini reviewed our video with them. After the reviewing the video, the race officials asked if we wanted to protest the driver of the black Spec Miata. We did not protest the other SM guy -- he apologized, and the VW driver (who was pissed off at us) cooled off after reviewing the incident. Video evidence is priceless!

PS imagine my surprise when the corner worker refused to review the video...

  • Nice to see Blackhawk Farms.... I was on that track in the late 70's.

  • I agree. I don't really see the Miata "pushing his way thru". That seems like an unfair characterization.

It looks to me like you dive under the vw, then decide to back out and your slowing causes the miata to hit you.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that your brakes locking up at 1:27 just before the Miata hits you? Or is that his brakes?

Either way, SOMEBODY's tires sure sound like they sqeal just before the bump.

I could be wrong though. :)

  • Seems like it bordered on being a racing incident. The Miata likely never expected your speed to drop off as rapidly as it did, or as much as it did.

Maybe he wasn't familiar with the course and wasn't expecting the corner to approach so quickly, but it hardly looked intentional.

In 15 years of working corners I've seen far more malice on the part of following drivers.
