Designed by architect Victor Gruen, Midtown Plaza was an economically vibrant center of retail activity for Rochester, NY, during its first 20 years of operation.
In the 1980's, as a number of suburban shopping malls opened outside of the city, and the region's population increasingly spread to outlying areas, Midtown struggled.
In 1994, the mall's two anchors, McCurdy's and Forman's department stores, forever closed. The closing of the Midtown branch of Wegmans followed soon thereafter.
In 2008 Midtown Plaza closed its doors to the public for the last time.
Today the clock resides in the Greater Rochester International Airport terminal, before it moves to a permanent home at the Golisano Children's Hospital of Strong Memorial Hospital, following completion of that facilty's expansion.
Dale Clark created the Clock of Nations for Midtown Plaza. Gilbert J.C. McCurdy originally paid only $8,500.00 for it! Two things that Wikipedia will not tell you.
