This is probably my favorite clip of videos from my trip to Goshen earlier this month, all filmed on Sunday morning. With the passing of train 24M my 24 hour count ends with a total of 75 trains. I missed a few trains that should been by (22K, 23T), and some that I saw the day before but not today (20N, 24W). I could have seen more extra's, such as a Detroit coal train or two, or a grain train down the branch, and maybe some more extra symboled freights like I did the day before (M43, M9K, M6N). There is also no local running on the weekend, so that is at least 2 more movements through Goshen that could have been added to the count. But, I did see many trains twice, such as 24M, 14N and 331, and 311 and 144 on the branch. Still, 80 trains is definately a possibility through Goshen these days.
I've never seen so many freights through here in 24 hours - a total of 34, with 11 of them taking the branch. At about 1am in the morning 4 WB freights were backed up getting into the yard (15N, 11K, 13Q and 359). I've never seen Elkhart struggle like that. I liked it :)
Train 1.
7:07am NB 311
Marion - Elkhart
I was so tired this morning. I didn't get a minute of sleep, but I just had to get out and film my last few hours here. It was well worth it! The fog was awesome. I knew Amtrak was due in soon so I gathered an extra shirt or two and set up the camera, hoping to catch one of the things that makes Goshen so fun for me - a high speed train meeting a 10mph branch train. 311 is huge today, with around 120 cars.
Train 2.
7:13am WB Capitol Limited
Washington D.C. - Chicago
It's so exciting sitting there listening to the flanges squeel, when all of a sudden the scanner comes alive: Amtrak 29 clear 410, 1 west out. Ooohhh!!! Just what I was hoping for! I turn the camera back on and catch the Capitol blasting through the morning fog at 70+ mph. Beautiful.
Train 3.
7:53am WB 331
Detroit (??) - Elkhart
You all will enjoy this! 331 blasts by with EMD power laying on its horn. Ahhhh, the sounds of Goshen! 331 is a new train that I've never heard prior to this trip. My guess is that it's a Detroit train. Trains 30A and 31A never came by, and if that wasnt enough to tell me, the consist of cars gives it away.
Train 4.
8:22am WB Lakeshore Limited
New York - Chicago
Amtrak 49 is right on time through Goshen and today has the Christmas Carol movie cars on the head end, making an extra long Lakeshore.
I missed video taping 23M at 8:29am, poking through Goshen after being run around by Amtrak.
Train 5.
8:49am EB 24M
Chicago 63rd - Baltimore
24M is running a tad bit earlier today, and is shorter than the last few days with about 50 pigs. I shot this from 9th street at the big turn, and was just a little bit too soon. The sun was still shining on the north side of the tracks, but it still looks pretty cool. I spent the night on the little ridge opposite of this position by those other cars.
Train 6.
9:12am EB 20E
Chicago 63rd - Morrisville
I figured I'd stay and catch 20E one last time before heading to Huntington for the rest of the weekend with my fam. She roars by at 60, looking pretty good with 68 vans. A nice end to my stay in Goshen.
I'll be back!!!
Hope you all enjoy and please comment!
God bless,
