Steve Hacker - Final Solo - "Sultans Of Swing" - Dire Straits

Guitar Lesson on the final solo to "Sultans Of Swing" by Dire Straits...Merry Christmas man! I hope you enjoy it, and I hope it helps! :)

Sorry this is so raw, everyone! This was a quick and dirty with plenty of mistakes, as I had no time to practice, it has crappy Flip audio, there is talking in the background, and the high-pitched squealing you hear was a guest in the studio who had a hearing aid that was feeding back...LOL!

Raw as it may be, I hope it gets the point across :)

****************************************************************************
"Text-Tab" for final guitar solo to "Sultans Of Swing" by Dire Straits / Mark Knopfler...

LEGEND (Explanation of how my Text-Tabs works). I am using this because it is text-friendly, I don't have to make a bunch of crazy lines for standard tab, I think it's easy to read, I don't have to worry about
alignment problems, I can PASTE IT ANYWHERE without special files or formats, and I can even TEXT IT VIA CELL PHONE if someone has questions. This, FOR ME, makes it the BEST kind of tab. I use this with my students a LOT...

LEGEND:

*** The "Numerator" of the "Fraction" is the STRING NUMBER, and the "Denominator" of the "Fraction" is the fret number. Example: 2/8 = 2nd string, 8th fret...

*** Individual Notes are separated by commas: ,

*** ^ = Bend...For example, below: 2/8^(2/10) ...means to bend the 2nd string 8th fret to the EQUIVALENT NOTE of the UNBENT second string on the 10th fret. In other words, a WHOLE STEP BEND, so the parenthesis is not an actually-played note, but an equivalent note you have bent to.

*** If ^ PRECEEDS a note, such as: ^2/8 it means a GHOST BEND, or a STRIKING OF THE NOTE WHILE IT IS BENT, and THEN BENDING DOWN to 2/8 from the previous whole step bend.

*** ~~~ ...This is the holding or sustaining of a note with vibrato at the end of a phrase.

*** A dash, - , indicates to either hammer onto, or pull-off to a note depending on where you are coming from. For example: 2/5-2/8-2/5 means that you hammer the 2nd string 8th fret from the 2nd string 5th fret, and then pull off from the 8th fret back to the 5th fret...If you see a dash before a note, such as -6/8, it means you hammer the note without picking/plucking it, having played no previous note on that string...

*** [2&3/5] ...This is an example of a chord or combination of strings. In this example, you play the 2nd and 3rd strings TOGETHER on the 5th fret, at the same time.

*********************************

Try, if possible to get authentic tone on this, via PLAYING IT FINGER-STYLE instead of with a pick. Mark Knopfler and I both would very much appreciate it ;) ...Here we go:

2/8^(2/10), ^2/8, 2/6, 2/8, 2/6, 3/7~~~

2/8^(2/10)^2/8, 2/8, 2/5-2/8-2/5, 2/3-2/5-2/3, [2&3/5]-3/7-3/5, [3&4/5]-4/7-4/5, [4&5/5]-5/7-5/5, -6/8 ...OR... -5/3 (Yes, this last C note, I overlooked in my video, and did not notice it until I was watching it back).

3/7, 2/6, 1/5, -2/8-2/6-2/8-2/6, 3/7~

*** UNDER CONSTRUCTION...I WILL ADD MORE NOTES WHEN I GET TIME...I HAVE AN 18 HR STUDIO WORK DAY, AND THUS VERY LITTLE TIME FOR TABBING STUFF OUT ***

*** Y'ALL MESSAGE ME AND TELL ME IF THIS STYLE OF TABBING IS WORKING FOR YOU, AND IF IT IS UNDERSTANDABLE, AND IF SO, I WILL DO MORE :)

  • All I have to say is perfection!

  • @rossman972 Thanks! :)

  • at least some tabs would be nice :/ At least I still managed to get some of the parts. Thanks :)

  • @80644 LOL! Thx :) Well at least I'm posting again! That alone is a MIRACLE considering all the setbacks I've had. It's been 2 yrs! LOL! This was just a quick&dirty video-gift for a friend.I wanted to break down every note but I just didn't(and don't)have the time.Be sure to watch after 3:45 to play along with the half-speed part.If you have questions on notes, just ask and I'll try to help. You can even text me at 229-416-8340 for quickest response. Also I give private lessons worldwide over Skype.

  • @80644 Ok...I now have a small sample of something new for you to try. I only had a couple minutes to throw a few notes down, and it this helps people, I will do more of it as I get time. Look in the "MORE" section of the video information, where I have started my own style of Text-Tab, which will be under construction for a while, until I get time to finish it. Let me know if it makes sense, and I'll do more. I included a legend to explain my Text-Tab Shorthand :)

  • Steve, so glad to see you back, hope all has been ok with your family. How is your boy? I have to tell you that the Sweet Home Alabama lesson has been the best I have seen on YouTube and I hope that you continue to give us more.

  • @xaxmann7520 Thanks very much! :) Yeah,I'm SORTA back I guess. This video was a quick&dirty. Not really the TEACHING video I would have LIKED to have made, calling out EVERY SINGLE NOTE,but,on the other hand,I guess if a guitarist is experienced enough to try to tackle this solo,he's gonna probably be sharp enough to catch what I'm doing anyway :) My son is better, thanks.Still a long road ahead, about 2 1/2 more years of Maintenance Chemo and follow-up after that. One day at a time :)

  • Steve, you do great stuff. After 30 years I finally have someone to teach me how to really play the First Solo in SHA. Hopefully the winds of Kharma will continue to blow your way on family health issues!

  • @SteveHacker Thanks a bunch. I'll be sure to check it out as soon as possible.

Just like @xaxmann7520 the sweet home alabama lesson was a great one and i play it at least once a day, to ensure I'm in shape. I also hope you as well as your family are doing well :)

  • @SteveHacker OKAY! That is just awesome :D But surely, this will cost something or not? This solo gives off such a beautiful sound and I'm sure many people would love to learn to play this. Of course these things take time and practice. Personally, I've only been learning either by tabs in videos or just videos themselves. The tabs you find on the internet tend to be a little inaccurate and the ones you find on youtube can help give off a more enjoyable sound.
