Actually even without cocaine he still would have likely fell apart. What happened is that in 1986 the Mets coaching staff decided to change his pitching mechanics believing that maybe if he's a groundball pitcher, it'll give him lower pitch count.
As the old saying goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
Cocaine sped up the process...
