Summits on the Air day, October 22nd 2011

My Hike up Hunter mountain the Catskills. SOTA Identifier W2/GC-002

Cool weather, turned into cold weather at the top. A completely fogged in summit made for no views or any cool photos. My new battery pack worked great, Im quite happy I dropped over 10 pounds of weight from my pack by using that instead of the SLA ones, well worth the investment.

Its as simple as hiking a hill with a hand held radio and making 4 contacts from the top.

I put some Anderson power poles on that charger end and I do my charging in a 50 cal ammo box, as these batter packs can be volatile and dangerous. While you might never have an issue, id rather have it burn up in an ammo box then burn through my desk/wherever it is.

  • Great stuff, sure wish there were any mountains here in the midwest. Might have to take a dxpedition to a mountain top for my first activation. Thanks for the battery link, what are you using to charge it properly?

  • Wanted to participate but wound up being busy. I'm game for an organized multi op if anyones interested in the NYC/Westchester area. I have my bush bag ready to go with FT-817, lead battery, 5EL portable log periodic for VHF/UHF, 5 band portable yagi or just wires ready to rock. Also have a 50watt portable amp for 2meters. Just contact me to get things going.

  • Rather liked the rough cut of the video. It felt like a SOTA activation - rather than a feature film!

  • Thanks for the QSO. I saw at 6:06 that I had a great audio on your side. 73 from VE2DRO
