A video self-interview of what JR and I learned on an attempted, then modified, trip into the Alaska Range in summer 2010, which morphed into a 1500 mile road trip around the state, due to the experiences described.
We learned a lot and have implemented these points and new techniques into trips and our gear list and techniques since then.

See http://www.joshspice.com/2010/07/education-continues.html for a more in-depth report on what we learned on this trip, including many techniques and thoughts not described in the video.

  • Hillarious. You two clowns had me rolling. I haven't laughed so hard since watching Wedding Crashers!

  • @gbm75wala Thanks. It was quite the time. Glad you enjoyed it :)

  • Ha, thanks Thorsten. I'm glad it was insightful.

Bockasaurus: 'Silent Bob' was even a little more grumbly and unimpressed by our trials and really wasn't interested in the video. I figured I'd keep him in the frame to add to the sense of misery and learning through suffering.

  • I was waiting with breathless anticipation for silent Bob to suddenly unleash his silent rage on your head. I enjoyed the 'dead-pan' style of wry, cynical understated humor. Please keep the vids coming.

  • Oh that was just great! One of the most convincing piece(s) of advice I've encountered. You delivered so much more punch into it, being there, misery and all, instead of the usual post from a warm couch. Thank you very much. I will do my research better next time too. You forget how it was so fast...

  • dude, whats up with silent bob?

  • Ha ha, funniest thing I've ever seen. Man, I've been there.

Personally I tend to go high tech and ultralight on everything so sometimes I'm caught with my knickers down in rough weather. Usually I just grumble and curse until morning and console myself with the thought that in a few days time I'd be sleeping in a soft bed, beer in one hand and a hoagie in the other...
