Northeast Eighth Street is the main east/west arterial for Bellevue Washington and the primary access route between I-405 and the city's downtown business district. To provide room for a new set of high occupancy vehicle (HOV) direct connector ramps on I-405 the existing NE Eighth Street bridge had to be replaced without causing significant disruption to traffic on either roadway. HDR engineers devised a unique solution that reduced a potential 15-month closure of NE 8th Street to just one weekend. Their innovative approach involved building the bridge in stages, one half at a time, then "rolling" one of those halves -- equal to 4.4 million pounds of concrete and steel -- into its permanent position a distance of 64 feet.
