Papua New Guinea has the worst health indicators in the Pacific region. Maternal and infant mortality rates are high, malaria, pneumonia and tuberculosis are prevalent, HIV/AIDS is a growing health concern. Violence, at all levels of society, presents a significant health burden. The countrys health services cannot cope with the needs. In September 2008, MSF started a surgery programme for victims of violence in the hospital of Tari, in the Western part of the island.
