I think the first slash was the one that connected and sliced it, from the look of Dante's moves the others were not slashed but flourishes.

Please prove that that hell gate is 381 meters tall(Empire State Building's height). Heck you can even scale it with those trees over there. At best the gate is only 30 meters or so. Please don't exaggerate.
