@gigaboat It made 55 commercial passenger flights over 7 weeks. This required 5 aircraft be available so at least one was in flight condition. Andrei Tupolev had to be available to personally approve every flight. The maximum passenger load carried was 80. Aeroflot didn't mention the Aircraft in it's 1970 5 year plan for operations

omg what a crappy plane, glad they pulled them out of airline service before anymore people were killed. God bless the concorde for their longevity service!

Time for some disputed thoughts .....wiki
"The Soviet government published the concept of the Tu-144 in an article in the January 1962 issue of the magazine Technology of the Air Transport. The air ministry started development of the Tu-144 on 26 July 1963, ten days after the design was approved by the Council of Ministers. The project started two years later than the Concorde. The plan called for five flying prototypes to be built in four years. The first aircraft was to be ready in 1966."

@pubuman ...... Always read a statement in its entirety ... my last sentence explains why th U.S. put the brakes on its SST program ... "America was the only country smart enought to know that supersonic transport technology didn't have a viable place in commercial use."

@theonick2 Wrong... just wrong, read Moon's excellent account of the Tu - 144 development ...

@swampwatch So all that money spent on the B2707 must have been some sort of a figment of my imagination ... And the fact that it was only canceled under extremely controversial circumstances in 71 must also be just something people made up? And a lot of the reasons for the cancellation were due to the greenies that America loves some much ... must also never have been the case... yep... that's how it happened!

Another Soviet aeronautical failure .... blah, blah, blah .... The Tu144 was first .... Big freaking deal .... The few planes that were built had problems flying .... FAR TOO MANY CRASHES .... and the concept and design was never put into production and service .... The British and French were successful with the Concorde .... Granted at a very high cost .... America was the only country smart enought to know that supersonic transport technology didn't have a viable place in commercial use.

@ugnut123 That is not correct the Tu-144 was made via stolen blue-prints of the concorde hence it's crudeness in design and functionality i.e. parachutes for brakes and low stability whilst flying in lower speeds and the later add-on of the tilt nose.

@ssssroryssss2 Than how come that TU-144 is totally different than concord? In structure design size, performance, everithing... Onley the beautifool lines of the wing is alike, ohh sorry thet is also different if you look at it clouse...
U know nothing about flying, and airplanes... ;) That is ok, but why ... never mind....
