The Institute for Human Virology, part of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, organized a candlelight rally March 10, 2009 to commemorate the National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Students from all of the schools at the University of Maryland, Baltimore participated in the event that was organized by Derek Spencer, executive director of the JACQUES Initiative. In addition to the School of Medicine, the School of Social Work also had a major role in organizing the event.

As a follow-up to how impactful the candlelight vigil was the JACQUES Initiative tested 26 people last night and stayed until 9:45 pm with one shocked woman who screened positive. The staff of JACQUES embraced this devastated woman who only got tested because she felt "safe." She has no insurance and will get her primary care with the JACQUES Initiative. To quote Derek Spencer, Executive Director of the JACQUES Initiative, this truly is putting the We, in HIV.
