Holland has made tremendous strides in improving pedestrian safety. Daylighting of crosswalks, moving them back 5-10 meters from intersections, giving autos--rather than pedestrians--the right of way, and improving lighting at night have all made tremendous improvements, and have saved thousands of lives. Traffic calming methods are now common throughout the world (except in the US and the third world), and Holland has reduced traffic fatalities by more than 70%.
