You can argue about ruby and McCoy till the cows come home, you will never get a solid answer, however I do think Sam twiston-Davies has a lot of McCoy in him in that he has a never say die attitude and is so strong in the saddle.
Ruby rides lots of good things for nicholls . McCoy wins on shitty 100 rated horses every day that ruby wouldn't look twice at. In any sport i've never ever seen a will to win like it. The man is made of granite. When he's finished it will be a sad day
@swannyneck I wouldn't disagree, and I'm a huge fan of both (when you consider the injuries the two men have suffered - and come back from, so very quickly: it's overlooked what an iron man Ruby is, too). But McCoy has won on horses that every other jockey now and in the past would have just given up on, and that is where his real specialness comes. Ruby is an artist with instinct (like Francome was, and, so I've read, Fred Winter): but McCoy just has something you can't even give a name to.
Just my own memories - Pridwell was an astonishing ride from AP; and actually Edredon Bleu's win at Cheltenham the year before (?Grand Annual?) was even more hair-raising than the Champion Chase, I was almost scared seeing how quickly he was tearing over the fences - but there was a hurdle race at Newbury he rode a horse for Francois Doumen, came off the pace, went up the far side in the home straight - it showed his versatility and racing brain. He really is outstanding. And a decent bloke.
I'll put my tin hat on in case someone misinterprets what I'm about to say, but some of McCoy's legend is because Martin Pipe trained some lesser horses far better than other trainers did, and told AP to go out, make all, and win. And we have a lot to thank Martin Pipe for. So it wasn't just that AP was inspiring poor horses to win - they had been properly trained to win, and correctly ridden. But there has never, ever been a more driven, determined sportman than AP McCoy. Oh, he's good too!
Look bottom left: Is that the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Award i see?!! OMG Talk about a banker bet!! 16 days before the awards this evening as well!!! Congrats McCoy if only i'd been able to have an xmas wager on you this year.. The national win earlier this year brought a tear to my eye :O)
