I am a great fan of MMORPGs, Ragnarok Online in particular. However, no one can deny that there are aspects of the game's culture and economics which undermine how enjoyable and even playable the game is. What I hope to get across is that the community, from the average player visiting forum guides to hackers sharing open-source bot programs, is universally dissatisfied with the game experience. No one category of player is to blame, nor is anyone spared the effects, be they social or economic, of the bot syndrome in RO.

I modeled this video on sprite comics, my predecessors in gamer commentary. The music is courtesy of asteria on ccmixter.org. Many thanks also go to the communities of roempire.com and mmorpg.com, who have said far more than I ever could about the problems and pleasures of RO.

This video essay was composed for Digital Rhetoric class and Dr. Losh of UC Irvine. It is for educational purposes only.
