Tanzania, Serengeti - Hyenas vs. Lions

We came upon a lion kill (zebra) with 7 adults. When we arrived there were 3 hyenas pacing and watching from afar. Over the next 10-15 minutes, hyenas starting arriving from every direction. Once their numbers got to about 30, they grouped together and pushed the lions off the kill. Unfortunately my video ran out, but as the lions moved off, they accidentally got too close to the neighboring elephant herd. The herd charged and ran right through all the hyenas, trumpeting and flaring since they had 2 young with them. Of course once the dust literally settled, we got dowsed from the vultures, unbeknownst to us, sitting in the tree above us. Quite a scene!

This commentor below me is wrong...3 hyenas will OWN a single lionesses. Hyenas can take punishment, whereas a lioness can't. A lionesses would go crazy trying to fight 3 hyenas who could bite with 1000 psi.

They need that many only to 100% INTIMIDATE them away....... Hyenas are no fighters, they dont fight, they just smarty intimidate with numbers, all they want is the food. But you would be STUPID to think that 3 Determined Hyenas couldnt kill 1 lioness in a fight....
