The Christmas season would not be complete without a trip to Stockbridge, MA. What a magical place it is...the charm of Main St.'s quaint little shops...the spirit of the great Norman Rockwell all around...and there is the hope of catching a glimpse of near-by resident, James Taylor!
Nope, US 7 has always run through Stockbridge; I was there in 1963 (and about 8 times after that). The traffic gets a little heavy during summer, fall and Christmas. Deal with it. Stockbridge does not have a true town square like many other New England hamlets. The front porch of the Red Lion Inn is still one of my favorite places in the nation.

I was in Stockbridge sometime during the summer of 1969 or 1970 (can't remember exactly), but I vaguely remember that there was no main thoroughfare running past the shops at that time. It was a lovely little, historic looking town square with shops on all four sides of the square. Although still very lovely, I'm dissappointed to see that "progress" as taken away the town square historic atmosphere by running a busy street through the middle of it.
