Jacob Hacker responds to the recent Lewin Group report on the public health insurance plan and offers his own report, backed up by months of research, laying out how a public health insurance plan could compete with private health plans on a level playing field to keep us healthier and save us more money.

The Lewin report was based on unwarranted assumptions. We already have had public options in more than a few states and they have all failed.
It's just more bureacracy saving little or no money.
Single payer is the only true reform.

Medicare is the payment plan? It's already bankrupt and no physician can take it. Look at Med school applications..already down for 2008 on AAMC Data. Smart students will find an easier line of work.

the Lewin group study has plenty of postive things to say about the govt run program...and the savings it will provide....the GOP has cherry picked Lewin group #'s to make their points... democrats could use the same report to make their points....but democrats refuse to read the lewin report....and democrats just bash lewin b/c conservatives read/cite the lewin report.

i'll say this, lou1785 is right about one thing, there's a lot to a name.. the name I'm thinking of is neo-CON. Conservative Con-men scaring old people & fools
As for waiting in line for surgery and going without certain medicines when the public-option happens.. Everyone I know has at least one person in their extended families that has been either denied coverage by an insurance company or have had to go into long, protracted battles with insurance companies to get the coverage they need.

I love how all the righties use *1* source to scare the American public. The only report they ever site is that done by the Lewin Group, which is a think tank owned by United Healthcare, which is... SURPRISE!!! An insurance company! Gee, the insurance company has found that a public-option is bad. Furthermore, look at each of the congressmen railing against this and look at how much in campaign contributions they get from insurance companies.

Will Mr. Hacker wait in line for surgery like the rest of us when this boondoggle of a sham plan is instituted?? Will he go without certain medicines due to curbing costs for such an extravagant, untried and expensive plan?
When has the Gov't created a progaram or institution which worked correctly?
Social Security....failing.
DMV....a laborious, and frustrating process.
FDA.........FCC - incompetent????
The IRS!!!??
Hacker- there's alot to a name sometimes - his is no exception.
