五木の子守唄 (Itsuki no Komoriuta)

Please enjoy Teresa's performance of a Japanese old lullaby "五木の子守唄　(Itsuki no Komoriuta)", meaning "The Lullaby of Itsuki". Itsuki (五木) in this song is the name of a village in Kumamoto prefecture, in Kyushu.

Teresa sang this song, without background orchestra, at her first Japanese live concert in Shinjyuku (新宿), Tokyo, in 1976, the second year after her debut in Japan. This part of her live songs is reported to have been unofficially recorded in a tape and was kept by Teresa.

The introductory and closing melody I added to Teresa's song in this video here is from the beautiful Ocarina performance by Sojiro (宗次郎).

Teresa sings as follows. The lyrics are written in old local dialect.

おどま 盆ぎり 盆ぎり
Odoma bongiri bongiri

盆から 先きゃ おらんと
Bon-kara sakya oranto　

盆が 早よ くりゃ 早よ もどる
Bon ga hayo kurya hayo modoru


おどんが 打死（うちん） ちゅうて
Odon ga uchin chuute

誰（だい）が 泣（に）ゃて くりゃか
Dai ga nyate kuryaka

裏の松やみゃ　せみが鳴く
Ura no matsu yamya semi ga naku


花は何の花　つんつん椿
Hana wa nanno hana tsun tsun tsubaki

水は天から　もらい水
Mizu wa ten kara morai-mizu

Pretty pictures - simple (few lines) yet elegant. The blue and white pictures look 3D - as if they were photos of carved artwork - really pretty.

It is nice to listen to Teresa's young voice. A very soothing song.
