Golden Circle - Gullfoss - Guldfallet - Golden Falls

Gullfoss is one of Icelands most popular sights. It is located in the river Hvítá in southern Iceland. The waterfall is divided into two "stairs". The first fall is 11 meters and the second 21 meters high. The water falls into a cleft 20 meters wide and 2,5 km long. The average amount of water running over this waterfall is 140 m³/s in the summertime and 80 m³/s in the wintertime.

During most time of the 20th century there have been interests in using Gullfoss to generate electricity. However some years after the waterfall was sold to the state of Iceland the project was abandoned and now the waterfall is protected from further exploitation.
