George Martin initially insisted The Beatles record this early number in 3/4 time. John Lennon argued this made the phrasing awkward and the result sound similar to bad editing. The matter was eventually resolved when Lennon hit Martin with his Gibson J160E.

This recording also shows the group beginning to explore the possibilities of the studio, as heard in the experimental use of reverb.

  • Embarassingly fake and shit - why do people do this kind of thing?

  • @kettlezone Maybe this genuine outtake sounds fake, but that is accounted for in the video description: "John Lennon argued this made the phrasing awkward and the result sound similar to bad editing".

  • I agree with MightyZoom. Fake indeed.

You can hear it in Lennon's singing. It would be an unnatural way of breathing.

  • @TheoBlonk

Lennon was experimenting with his breathing a lot around this time.

  • All the overdubs and instrument parts are the same as the 4/4 version. This includes sounds / touch / notes / timbres / voicings / mix levels . This is a HACKED edit of the 4/4 version. Okay it's not stupid. It's FRAUDULENT, FAKE, BADLY DONE, MISREPRESENTIVE, FAUX, QUASI, and f**ked up. And the story of George Martin wanting No Reply in 3/4 is a lie, an urban myth. Ask any professional audio engineer if this is hacked. It doesn't even make musical sense. "Experimental use of reverb?" Pathetic.

  • @MightyZoom thanks man, I needed a laugh! Your chronic irony bypass was just the ticket.

  • Very special. I prefer the original 4/4 time version but once again you've done a great job.

    Eric

  • Of course by far prefer i the 4/4 time version nevertheless is it very interesting listening to it in 3/4 !

  • fuck you

  • OMFG what have you done with this great song?!?!?! D:

  • How about if you hack it and edit it until you have 19/8 time? Kind of a Mahavishnu-meets-the-Beatles hybrid vibe.

  • FAKE! But quite well done. Some of the other commenters should develop a sense of humour. BTW 'I'll Be Back" from a Hard Days Night was recorded in 3/4 time before John found it, 'too difficult to sing' and changed to 4/4.

  • I actually really like this. I think it sounds pretty good in 3/4.

  • @Mrdianalynn I know - it doesn't work! :)

  • @kettlezone This is an attempt to change the time signature of the piece from 4 to 3.4/.

  • stuuuuuuupid!!!
