Sulla foce del fiume vulcanico Alcantara si trova da 28 secoli la parte marina di Taormina: il porto di Taormina che oggi chiamano Giardini Naxos. 12.000 anni fa una colata lavica si allontanò solitaria dal cono vulcanico scivolando sul terreno preesistente alle ultime falde del Monti Herei la idove si incrociano con i Nebrodi ed i Peloritani, FINENDO nel corso di un fiume che raccoglieva le acque di questi tre spioventi per riversarsi nel mare di Taormina.
