Here is Bobby's dad, the great baritone Robert McFerrin Sr. (1921-2006). He was the first black soloist at the Metropolitan Opera. McFerrin also was the voice behind Sidney Poitier's Porgy in the classic Otto Preminger film of Porgy & Bess in 1959. Here are four spirituals with Norman Johnson, piano.

1. Deep River
2. His Name So Sweet
3. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot
4. Witness

  • @kadoguy2006 A million thank yous, for putting together this great musical tribute to one of the great voices of the twentieth century. I had the good fortune to share quite a bit of time with Mr Mc Ferrin in St. Louis, Mo. He was an incredible man with a gift for singing that became more amazing each time he opened his mouth. He could blow you away, with his powerful sound and intrepretation of both operatic literature and most especially Negro Spirituals.

  • A towering testiment to God's grace and brilliance. Thank you, Maestro McFerrin.

  • Nice.!!!

  • Oh my goodness! I never realized that Bobby McFerrin was the son of this man. I used to listen to him as a child! I loved his songs and his voice! I'm blown away!

  • ..wow

  • wow wow wow... amazing

  • this is just amazing :~)

  • breathtaking

  • Too bad "the Met" had/probably still has such fears and America such hate. I think fear of competition as well; remove the competion (Mr. Mcferrin) or prevent it then there is more chance for others who look the same.

You should hear his arias and you will see other singers could not surpass him unless he was removed or prevented from participating. Such a waste!!! Inspite of all this he made a great name for himself.
