The sack of rome is the sack of rome of 1572 when Holy Roman Emperor Charles invaded Rome taking Pope prisoner, during this 3\4 swiss guards gladly faught for what was right and good in the world allowing 1/4 to escort the pontiff. The other sacking of rome did nothing to the church as while Rome fell the church was protected and had anominity. The guards are one of the best trained armies in the world their only let down is they lack numbers this is recognised by all world governments.

they have guns. and unless you're an actual soldier, then they're better with them then you are with your submachine gun.
There are pretty practical reasons for this:
1) if you have a family waiting at home you think a split second before you take a bullet for someone else
2) the duty is demanding and you are practically constantly on alert - not much of a family life there
3) the barracks just don't provide enough space for 110 families
