Conservation of resources. Let's say you got stranded. You can make a fire with a drill but you also have a box of matches. You should save your matches for lighting a signal fire when seconds matter, and use the drill to start your everyday fire, since time is not important. Conservation of resources and efficiency keep you alive.

when is a good time to collect mullein? Or better yet, what does the plant look like when you collect it for this purpose? I collected a stalk but the inside pith was very soft and I couldnt even sharpen the end to a point.
