Hey Guys!
This is me signing "Ordering At McDonald's" which was a project for ASL 3 in 2010.

This is what the translation in English is (also typed up and translated by me):

Ever since I started going to restaurants, I always ordered through use of American Sign Language. I never communicated by writing on paper. It would be like saying pathetically, "I'm deaf." If someone did that, then the hearing people would be condescending and look down on you as though you were or had a problem. That was never me. If there was a problem, then I would DEAL with the people to figure it out. I never compromised. I always signed. One day, I was unexpectedly allowed to join the national theater of the Deaf, NTD, and I traveled with them all over the county. One time, I traveled with them and went to DENVER, where my short friend and I entered a MCDONALD'S. That was a long time ago; and at that time, I was decked out in a black LEATHER jacket, and looking like a biker with zippers all over the front of the jacket, a belt, thick bracelets, an earring, and big, dark SUNglasses. I was feeling very cool. I walked with swag and strutted in. My friend wanted to write his order down on a piece of paper, when I looked and him and said, "What? There's no need for that. We can just sign. I've always done that." My friend replied, "That's ridiculous! The people are hearing!" I said, "Wait. Just watch me. I got this." With confidence, I began to order by signing. "First, I want a BIG MAC, second, I want French fries," I signed until the woman waitress jumped up and motioned for me to wait as she bounced away in a hurry. Feeling very proud of myself, I told my friend, "See? What did I tell you? That's so much hassle trying to go back and forth trying to write while the waitress puts cups on the table! Who needs that?" As I was chatting, the waitress came and slid a menu towards me. I looked down and was like "you've got to be kidding me." The menu was in BRAILLE. My friend burst out laughing and told me I was the "2nd HELEN KELLER." I was embarrassed and felt my pride go down- fast. I took off my sunglasses, set my hands on the table, and with force, signed to the waitress, "I can see you!" The woman was boggled and flabbergasted. From then on, my communication tactic stayed the same, but I understood that I should take my glasses off first before signing. I sure learned from that experience!

  • I wanted to learn how to read enough sign language so that when people come in to my restaurant I could know what they're saying ... can you help?
