Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...

Q: 1980's French pop music has a great dance groove to it that I can't seem to polish up within my own guitar work. I've watched your videos on Caribbean style and thought you might be able to help me with this similar style? You are a great internet tutor, Merci and Happy New Year!
Gustave -- Paris, France

A: In not only Paris, but also throughout Europe, (and even Africa), this style was massively popular in the 1980's. The style you're speaking of is very dance oriented. And, you're correct in that it often contains dense afro-caribbean percussion beats which are in most cases simply programmed from off of drum machine loops or from sequencer software such as the incredibly popular; FL Studio. This style can contain very funky bass lines, as well as, some minimal horn lines often done through layered synth sequences. Something else to be aware of - is that the more Caribbean stuff was commonly known as Zouk style. The guitar's role here can vary greatly between the use of; full-chords, partial chords, and single-note lines. The common thread is contained within it's rhythmic duration, specifically that it is syncopated and emphasizes off-beat sixteenth-notes.

  • Love your rhythm guitar videos. Great stuff! Would love to see more stuff on funk/disco, and the role of the guitar in latin music like salsa, rhumba, bachata, cumbia, etc. Great playing and videos.

  • @iamheadbanger,

Yes, exactly man... Personally, I blame North America's ethnically blind record industry. This music from Europe is totally radio friendly. 99.999% of this music is slick, and has high-tech production. The female singers are sexy and have millions of fans. But, in North America nobody's heard of this because they ram crap like Katy Perry, Justin Beiber and Lady GaGa down our throats. Why? The entire industry is a joke. For 30 years it's just been plastic zero-talent bozo's.

  • /watch?v=lQCO2feAG8U in croatia, serbia, bosnia this kind of playing is very popular :D

  • @3dlabs99 well said!

  • @philipthedude Yeah, you're absolutely right :)

  • Happy New Year!!

  • This is prime material, Andy! Thanks.
