How to Become a Well-Dressed Rebel in 30 Days

"It's the male cleavage," says designer Thom Browne of one of his style signatures: flashing a couple of inches of ankle between the hem of his cropped suit pants and the top of his chunky wingtips. Today, Browne explains why losing the socks—or at least wearing some all-but-invisible "loafer socks"—can give your suit and tie a shot of personality.

  • I go totally barefoot when wearing my loafers sockless. I think loafers look better sockless than lace ups do. Feel great not wearing sox. In fact I wear all my shoes sockless all I can.

What do you think about wearing sandals with suits? thats what I do too. That's quite rebellious, don't you think?

  • Tough look to pull off, but if you have the right sandals then go for it! My feeling is that they should be simple and of a colour that is complimentary. I don't think you could go wrong with simple black sandals in this case.

You should make a video response to show the world what they look like!

  • do they use the four in hand knot for the ties? half windsor?

thanks for all these vids man watching and taking notes.

  • Most of these are four-in-hand. I think they think it's more modern than a half windsor. I myself am now using the method of knot shown in ep.14.

    Thanks for watching my vids!

  • @DevLcL It's all preference. No one says you "should" not wear socks to look different. If you are comfortable and confident with it by all means - go ahead.

  • Every single guy they showed in this video looked ridiculous to me. Like an infant school boy.

  • Let me get this straight.. I should wear no socks to not look like the other guys that do wear socks? But then wouldn't I just be looking like the guys that don't wear socks?

I'm confused... really just seems like preference to me.

  • G.Q.: FAIL. *Never* look sockless with lace-up dress shoes. This is rebellious, nothing else. Keep the sockless look to driving mocassins, deck shoes, et c.: basically, slip-ons without heels. (And never wear thick-heeled loafers with no socks: that'll make you look about 80 years old and wannabe-Floridian.)

  • SORRY! In some repsects SOCKS should be worn!

  • Sorry but I just think the video ideas are a whole box of wrong. If you have to wear a suit then you have to wear dress shoes and dress socks. If it's hot then leave the wool suit at home and invest in a linen suit. As for the socks, in hot weather avoid wool, heavy cotton and definitely avoid nylon, opt instead for cool mercerised cotton. It's fine, it's wicks and it's cool. The above tips look smart and timeless. The suggested look in the video is not innovative, it's mental hospital chic!

  • @britishdramakid the spring summer 2011/2012 sandals would look nice with or with out socks but daring for SOME guys.

  • " Shop, mens store, suit store? "

    Office.

  • This is the nail in the coffin for me. GQ are clueless. No socks is what people in the mad house look like

  • @nakedmambo unless you have to wear suits in warmer weather, even hot weather, loafers sockless, cool & comfortable.
