it has more traction because it has a longer contact patch it sounded weird to me but then i got one from walmart as i am a beginner and it rolls over some crazy obstacle such as almost 90 degree angle curbs then i pipped a tire going over a curb :( but i think they give me more power over my BMX 20 incher i used to have check out the fisher 29er videos Gary Fisher knows what he's doin he makes some awesome bikes if you ask me... he also makes some super exspensive ones as well hope this helps.
The bigger wheels give you better traction, more ground clearance, more pedaling power, more resistance to bumps and stuff like that. Other than that, the bigger wheels do gear the bike up a bit (1st is like 2nd, 3rd is like 4th and so on) since the wheel takes longer to turn over 360 degrees, but this allows for the use of smaller chain rings and gears saving weight and space since you no longer need the bigger gears.
i just love my little 9ER...actually i shouldtnt say little.

I saw a 29er on Monday, didn't expect the wheels to be that big (they don't look too big in videos).
