Yes, lap steel is much cheaper, and some of the techniques can be transferred over to pedal steel guitar later... like fingerpicking, using the bar, etc. With PSG you'll have foot pedals and knee levers too. The tuning is not the same however. There are many different lap steel tunings depending on the style of music you want to play. I like C6. The most common PSG tuning is E9. thanx

Im really interested in learning to play pedal steel. This seems to be a cheaper way to learn. Will using a lap steel tuned to pedal steel settings and using a volume pedal give me this same basic experience and knowledge so that when I feel Im ready I can make the move up to a pedal steel?

Hello, the Rogue EA-3 lap steel does Not have this sound. That is a very cheaply made low end instrument with poor sustain. The Rogue Jersey Lightning that I'm playing here is a much better instrument, in my opinion. As far as the tuning... you can put any tuning on a lap steel. These come from the factory with an E tuning (thick strings). I prefer C6 tuning. You'd have to use lighter strings for C6. Thanks
