Fidel Castro's formal resignation as Cuba's president marks the end of an era. Although it remains unclear how much influence he will continue to wield, after 49 years of formal rule by Fidel Castro, it is clear that Cuba will never be the same. It is also long past time for the free will of the Cuban people on the island to guide its future.

Unfortunately, neither the United States government nor the successor regime in Cuba appears prepared to deal with what comes next. At this historic time, a continuation of the status quo or a hardening of positions, either in Cuba or in U.S. policy toward Cuba, are not viable options.

Center for American Progress Senior Fellow Dan Restrepo offers his thoughts on Fox News.

  • cuba is in charge.dont be another united state

  • I dunno...a lot of the "things will never change" sentiment was said in the 1980s with regard to eastern Europe...but every other communist regime in the world save North Korea has either collapsed or reformed itself by now. 'Tis but a matter of time before SOMETHING changes in Cuba. What changes, well I don't know.

  • These people are morons. Cuba will NEVER ever change it's ways. These guys like Castro and Che fought hard for what THEY believe is right and they won. The USA then kills Che and strangles the cuban economy in order to make communism seem weak. I don't believe in any type of governent so im not defending communism. These people think Cuba will change because Fidel is not in charge, Please! Cuba will never become a democracy just like Iraq never will because the PEOPLE don't want it.

  • Let's say the Castro's leave the scene and commies are gone from Cuba, anybody thinks that country will become a democracy?

  • Either way the US should change its policies up on how they deal with Cuba

  • I understand that his son, the caretaker, is just as bad as his father, so, what is going to change?
