I always thought the level draining crap was BS, especially in games where the level-draining monsters are common.

No wait, you have pretty good CHA. With that +2 mod, in 3E, you should be able to comfortable turn undead with an HD of 7. And it doesn't look like those Wraiths have more than 30 or so HP so their HD can't be too high. Just bad rolls I guess.

Yeah, given your CHA, I think the highest hit die you're able to comfortably turn (about a 14 or higher on the check) is only 4 or 5. That's for 3E anyway. Oh and my math may be screwed up so it may be wrong anyway.

Part of the problem is that Charisma is used to determine the frequency with which you can turn undead close to your level. I'm pretty sure it worked this way in 2nd Edition D&D as well as it does in 3.5
Anyways, don't feel bad about using saves. When I get to playing nethack, I definitely intend to use saves. *nodnod*

Wraiths are indeed Undead, so Destroy that lich (haha bad pun). When you get level drained you should be halfway to next level.

The "red thing" is a boss monster, a really strong (for that floor) monster that only appears on that floor. Isn't it coincidental that it appeared on the next floor as a normal enemy?
