The POWERBENDER is a soulful new tuning for the 10 hole diatonic harmonica, retaining the best aspects from tradition while making the harp more expressive and easy to play through the whole range.

This promo video demonstrates how it can be played in 11 keys and 8 positions without overblows.

Here's how it compares with a Richter harp:

KEEPING the BEST from the PAST
• Same Three Octave Range as a 10 Hole Richter Harp
• Same Familiar Lower Octave for Chord Rhythm and Blues Licks

NEW, DIFFERENT and BETTER
•Same Breathing Pattern Throughout: Blow Note always Lower than Draw (no
confusing switch in top octave, as on Richter tuning)
• Familiar Low Octave Draw Bend Licks Now Possible Everywhere
• Simplified Technique: No Blow Bends to Learn
• Simplified Technique: No Overdraws to Learn
• Every Draw Reed Bends at Least a Semitone
• Easy Chromatic Runs using Bends Only
• Simple, Soulful Draw Bends replace Richter Overblows and Overdraws
• Overblows Available on Every Hole (but not important for most playing)
• Top Octave Easy to Play, with Big Expressive Draw Bends
• Intuitive Tuning, Simple to Learn. Similar Phrasing in Each Octave
• Easy to Play in Common Positions: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 11th, 12th
• Many Positions can be Played Both Major or Minor Without Overblows
• Play Easily in Eleven Major & Minor Keys without Overblows
• Sounds Great on any Stock Harp (no embossing, average reed gaps)
• Suits Standard Setup (no valves) or Half-Valving -- it's up to the Player
• Better Tuning for Contemporary Music Throughout the Range
(easier and more expressive phrasing for Pop, Rock, Jazz, Folk..

    i think this is layout

so change is in the middle octave

for lower and upper octaves richter or paddy richer( as shown in upper one) can be used ( that's what i'd use, but brendan i think uses normal richter)

and for lower and higher octave i think one can use rcihter or paddy richter (as i showed for the higher one) layout

  • @magerlab: Close... :)

The tuning diagram is now up on the POWERBENDER page of my website, along with the philosophy behind it, extra text and music examples from the book/CD. Brendan

  • The POWERBENDER is a lot of fun to play. The notes bend easily and the arrangement of notes give it a jazzy feel. If you are a guitar player, it is very easy to play this when it sits in a harmonica holder because the reeds are responsive and a little energy can coax out a solid sweet sound, without tiring yourself. I am looking forward to when more keys will be available. This is A high quality instrument that is affordable. Kudos to Brendan Power for coming up with this soulful instrument.

  • Effects are for synthesizers, pure acoustic always triumphs.

  • Hi Brendan, Lindy here from Little old NZ, thanks for helping me out with the FireBreaths, now how can i get my hands on some of these?

  • OK Brendan! This really exciting--I just ordered the book--looking forward to working with it. . .

  • This is great, surely the future for the diatonic harp is to move toward more chromatic flexibility without needing overbends. This looks like it goes pretty far and is backed by Brendan's experience and new book exploring the tuning. It makes it a bit easier to tread the path when a professional has done such a lot to lay it out for you.

  • It looks like this instrument will unleash a lot of creativity. I'll be getting one and will explore the more exotic scales from within a modern blues format. You've just delivered my Christmas present to myself.
