actually its 3 second-1 mile

@tails12993 Every guide I've looked at says that after counting the number of seconds between the flash and the thunder, divide by 5 for the distance in miles (it takes sound about 5 seconds to travel 1 mile).

@Cchrisbud813 wonder where the sound originates from though. if it somewhere in the sky youd probably have to factor in some other stuff. but i dont know that much about the physics of lightning

@bl4h1 It is thought that thunder is caused when the bolt of lightning heats up the air around it, forcing it to expand very quickly. This expansion causes a shockwave of air vibrations which we hear as the sound of thunder itself. The sound would thus come from every part of the lightning bolt.

that bolt was no ghosting effect that was a close strike withing 5 to ten feet of your house

@survivorman1265 Actually, I know it was a ghosting effect because I saw the real bolt (my camera was not pointed at it) and it was much farther away than 5-10ft. You can tell it's a reflection because it only looks like a piece of a bolt.
