THE 411:
--------------
What is rarely known is that this show was not your standard "gig" but actually a Musical based on the "Fresh Fruit In Foreign Places" Album conceived by August Darnell.
In fact it was considered the first "Rap" Musical. The idea was to stage a musical in a concert/club setting.... to have a tight show but also keeping it loose.
This one by Coati Mundi is the only one in the Fresh Fruit video but there were other "Rap" narrations performed through out the show by various artists including Gichy Dan. The narrations served as a tool to tie the songs together and provide an ongoing account of the journey to find "Mimi".
The show never stopped. There were no breaks in between. All the songs , narrations and musical score type interludes segued from one to the other.
Every song from the "Fresh Fruit In Foreign Places" album were performed that evening unfortunately however some songs along with the Rap narrations were edited out due to time constraints imposed on the video. The video thus makes the performance come off like a concert as oppose to a Musical.
The show was also presented at NYC's Public Theatre in association with the legendary and great Joesph Papp. That show which was performed in a regular theatre setting featured additional actors and dancers along side the rapping narrators.
