Witnessing the vote count has always been popular in the towns of our part of Connecticut, so perhaps it is elsewhere. When we had the lever machines, the public was always invited to come have a look at the numbers themselves, after the tallies were announced. The ceremony gave assurance that democracy was protected. Woodbridge and Bethany were among the first towns using the electronic machines in 2005 during spring municipal elections. Do we understand the technology? Maybe not, but at least we can watch the numbers tick out...
