Very true. The same prerequisites are present with socializing with people. Some are good at it while others are not. Good cooks bad cooks, Every trade or school of knowledge can be wielded as an art. It depends on how much will and interaction one puts into the craft is what make an art worthy to be marveled.

the opponent notices this, I have directed his attention, he prepares for a punch. I kick him in the groin, smoothly, with a natural movement. He doesn't even see it - just like a spectator who didn't see you do anything to the cards!

Martial arts has boosted my confidence in dangerous situations (like dealing with a knife wielding neighbour), whereas magic has boosted my confidence in social situations, including going for interviews and being a teacher. So both have helped me in the world!

I have used the skills garnered from magical misdirection to improve my martial arts. There are many more subtleties to it than "look over there". Most magicians will hold a deck of cards at waist level, and then the audience looks at them. If I drop my hand down and casually hold the deck, people don't look at it, as I make it unimportant, and patter keeps their attention.

Likewise, if I move smoothly "like water", nothing stands out to them. If I tense up my arms...

I too do martial arts and magic (and salsa, but we'll leave that out of this discussion). In terms of direct application of magic in real life, I can only think of David Copperfield avoiding being mugged by showing all of his pockets empty using sleight of hand.

However, the skills learnt in magic are far greater than sleight of hand, and it's hard to get that from most youtube clips.

to be considered as art, there are two requisites, creative intent and human intervention..both are present in magic.. That makes it art.. -Mark Vincent Java

I think magic certainly counts as a performance art, but whether it is HIGH art or FINE art really depends upon the ability of the performer and the reaction of the audience.
