It was a burglary that went tragically wrong. Three shots were fired in a remote farmhouse in Norfolk. A 16 year old boy was killed, a burglar wounded and a farmer imprisoned. The crime turned an eccentric and reclusive loner, Tony Martin, into the unlikeliest of tabloid heroes.

In Real Crime: A Shot in the Dark, Mark Austin reveals what happened that night and how the repercussions sparked a national debate on self-defence.

With exclusive testimony from Tony Martin, interviews with his family and friends, insights from the professionals involved in the case, and access to police footage, the programme reveals the events that led to Tony Martins trial for murder.

  • he should sell the place and see a little apartment to retire

  • @ad8369 Not much solitude and privacy in an apartment - which is why Mr Martin liked the farmhouse. But I guess some people just don't understand why some people don't crave to be around others all the time.

  • Oh, I see Britain has almost as many gun nuts as we do here in the States. How refreshing... *rolls eyes* NOT!!!

  • @jposh707 If you mean people who would rather take responsibility for their own self defence than wait the 20 minutes for the criminals to have their way with you before the police finally arrive then yes. And don't come running to me for help either when the tyrants come for you in the middle of the night to load you onto the cattle train to the death camp.

  • Punish criminals, not gun owners. The people of Britain should practice civil disobedience, re-arm themselves, and shoot every burglar they have the opportunity to. That would put quick brakes on the crime problem. Those burglars had been arrested previously repeatedly - 50 times, 30 times. Why were they not in jail?

  • Mr. Martin should have been given a medal for shooting this disgusting thieving gypsy filth its unfortunate the second gypsy burglar was not killed too and society would not have to support these thieving gypsy parasites!

  • Meh, if some douche broke into my house they could expect the same reaction.

  • 07:01 - 07:10 lol sky info bar.

  • The bloke may be a bit nutty but he had everey right to shoot the criminals. They were on his property. Good for him.

  • Additionally, I don't get why this program appears to glorify the burglars as if they were the victims. It beggars belief, since Martin is the victim.

  • Anyone who enters my home without my consent deserve what they'll get which is a bullet whereever it lands - period.

  • Caller: He's been shot

Operator: Why do you think he's been shot

Caller: Because he's saying he's been shot

  • When the seconds count, the police are minutes away.

  • i think we should be allowed to defend ourselves...here in canada if you defend yourself even against a home invader you get charged.....at least the americans can defend themselves

  • is it any wonder immigrants consider london a place to rob and burn -- with such "help the burglars and arrest the burgled" programs -- i always admired england, but more and more i find they are complete whackos -- just look at this completely sick feature

  • My first gut reaction was that I would not have shot blindly at noises. But then I thought you have to put yourself in his place. He's alone at night in an isolated place and has had trouble with people who don't belong there before. So I can't say I wouldn't have done the same. And as far as I am concerned people have a right to defend themselves and their home from intruders.
