I visited Cardiff a couple days ago. Cardiff Castle was closed by the time that I got to it, but just north of the city is Caerphilly Castle which is a must see for American tourists. Europeans probably won't be too excited to see another castle, but Caerphilly is the largest one in Wales. It's got a mote, two layers of walls, siege equipment, an inner keep, amazing towers, and it's very cheap--especially if you're a student. And yes, they take student I.D's for U.S universities.
