The Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Prevention Project was established in 1996. The New Mexico Strategic Plan for Disability Prevention recognized the need for a Statewide Lead Agency to coordinate the FAS/ARBD prevention efforts in New Mexico. This coordination includes; public education campaigns, community projects, social change and advocacy efforts at multiple levels of intervention. A statewide FAS Advisory Committee provides guidance to the project coordinator. The Committee is comprised of individuals who have an interest in FAS prevention and women having healthy pregnancies. The project staff have expertise in FAS/ARBD prevention and intervention, experience in primary and secondary prevention programs, media marketing, program development, continuing education for health and human services providers, educators and the community. The program is funded by the Disability and Health Program, New Mexico Department of Health.
