here's a truely rotten record i bought 2nd hand about 20years ago. i used to brush it with those carbon brushes, wash it with palmolive soap & soft cloth and also with the "knosti" cleaning machine
i got me a hannl micro vacuum record cleaning machine (similar to nitty gritty, vpi, kab, keith konks etc) and made some experiences:
- nearly every record sounds a bit more brilliant after washing (also brand new ones sometimes)
- real scratches oviously can't be repaired but:
- there's quite some dirt which causes a huge pop or even a skip!
here's an example what a vacuum machine can that a velvet brush or a dishwashing detergent can't!!
The biggest thing I notice is while the light noise floor is still there the high end is much improved (the flanger on the cymbal in the right speaker becomes much more noticable) and the overall ambience improves. Plus no big pops.
