this of course comes from the fact that the ottomans ruled the region for centuries, thus, making the cultures sort of melt together under an imperial banner.
This is why there's like 10 different kinds of traditional baklava, moussaka, dolmathes, taboleh, etc.

moussaka is a "xyz" dish.
its mediterranian. Persia, The Balkans, Greece, and Israel sort of all mix together as far as food goes :P

@drushtvo by the way you cannot use the word macedonian if you are not from greece. That is what the UN says.

@healthyvegan I don't know the exact origin. It's for sure somewhere in the Balkans. However when you see moussaka in restaurants of the western world it's actually the Greek form. So that's why most people think it's greek.

This recipe was delicious! The only thing I would change is I would soak the eggplant in salt water to remove some of the bitterness. Thanks for all your great recipes!

@healthyvegan actually, moussaka is turkish. I am Macedonian and we have adopted this from the turks from when they owned the balkans for 500 years. The Greeks and Bulgarians will make many claims that aren't true.

@drushtvo haha... yeah, I just got back from 3 months in Europe, 1 of which was spent in Turkey, and noticed a LOT of dishes that in North America are called Greek, but are also done in Turkey. There seemed to be a lot of similar dishes along the Med region where we travelled, probably since the growing region produces a lot of the same foods. Whatever country takes credit, they make some delicious foods around there!!
