lol. I ride uphill daily on my mountain bike on the way to work. It has seriously strengthened my legs. I used to struggle with running long distance but since biking uphill over the last year running is now a piece of cake.

I'm a noob bike rider. Is it best to go to the lower gears when going up hill? or higher gears?
-
Looks like you could do with some lower gears

We used to ride our mountain bikes up Jester.. Lakewood is fun too. Of course we had like 20x28 gears too, lol.

u want steep hills come to st.thomas we got black point, donkey hill, crown mountain, mafolie, raphune hill, donoe bypass, magens hill and all of them are 20percent grade and above and there is so many more i havent mentioned

...forgot to mention - Spicewood SE of Cap. of TX Hwy, too - that hurt! Just plain torture.

For a Michigan flatlander, I'm not a bad hill climber. On a visit to Austin this summer, I did Beauford (back side of Jester - maybe steeper), Far West, and Spicewood Spgs. NE of Lampasas in one ride - grueling but gratifying. Beauford is just sick!

yeah thats about right, and if you want a killer climbing ride do: far west boulevard, jester, city park, and courtyard

17-20% for a half mile.
Hill climbing is awesome fun. It makes you strong. Anyone can draft on a flat road for hours in a boring peleton. It's when you get to the hills, the true tough riders then shine.
